AI Insights: What’s Actually Working Now for Business Growth

The AI tide is still rising—fast—but only a small fraction of companies are translating AI into real profit lifts. This year researchers at MIT shared that despite billions of dollars spent on GenAI, just 5% of firms are consistently getting measurable value.

However, those that have achieved real ROI have done so because they’ve identified opportunities—including solid use cases—to assess and rebuild workflows, train their people, and fix their data foundations. And thus lies the opportunity for businesses willing to implement AI effectively.

AI adoption among SMBs is skyrocketing.

Not long ago many businesses thought AI was a tool only big companies could afford. But now AI is silently becoming a small business’s “best friend.” In fact, three out of four—a full 75%—of SMBs are already investing in AI. Some are just getting started, while others are going “all-in.”

The momentum is clear. Growth is coming to businesses that embrace AI, not avoid it. This represents a major shift in how companies are choosing to thrive. AI is now fully integrated into over a third of SMBs' daily operations.

The data’s telling: small businesses that are scaling up invest in AI at nearly double the rate of struggling firms. The AI-to-growth connection is now unmistakable

Reality check: For AI adopters, AI has become an everyday tool in their business toolbox—and they assume most peers are using it too. Non-adopters, however, largely don’t see it that way; only one in three think AI is common. The risk: many small businesses are underestimating just how many of their competitors already have a head start and are benefitting from its daily use.

The challenge now is to achieve measurable outcomes. Recent surveys show usage and spending are surging, but winners separate themselves by focusing on concrete, near-term use cases tied to revenue and efficiency. Salesforce and Verizon report broad AI experimentation among SMBs, while International Data Corporation (IDC) notes growing budgets—but also rising demands for clear use-case ROI before purchases.

3 trends we’re betting on (because they’re paying off):

  1. Agentic AI for revenue workflows. We’ve transitioned to “doers,” not just “answerers.” AI agents can now qualify leads, chase invoices, showcase your customer value, or reorder stock under guardrails. McKinsey highlights agentic AI as a top 2025 tech trend; Intuit’s latest data shows SMBs using AI regularly jumped sharply this year.

  2. Voice-native service & sales. Conversational agents are “growing up”—AI agents with voice and hybrid reasoning are being rolled out to handle nuanced, on-brand customer interactions. This is a big win for SMB service, without needing to scale headcount.

  3. Workflow before tools. The 5% who win have leaders using AI daily, solid data foundations, and reimagined processes—not just tool licenses. The winning formula: train teams, redesign steps, then automate.

What’s working now (playbooks we implement with clients):

  • Lead-to-Close Copilot: AI qualifies inbound leads, drafts tailored follow-ups, and books meetings—owners report shorter cycle times and higher close rates when tied to CRM events. (Backed by Salesforce SMB trends showing AI uplift in speed and customer connection.)

  • Customer Success Radar: Proactive “save” workflows: usage dips, late payments, or ticket spikes trigger outreach with personalized offers—protecting monthly recurring revenue (MRR) where it matters most. SMBs are prioritizing tech that improves customer retention and efficiency, a fact also shared by Verizon.

  • Cash-Flow Command Center: Agent watches AR/AP, nudges customers, proposes payment plans, and summarizes weekly cash insights for owners—reducing admin time while improving collections (this being a top SMB need in QuickBooks’ current survey wave).

Reality check: AI spending is rising, but the market is rewarding firms that can prove ROI fast. SMBs increasingly demand clear, scoped use cases from vendors/MSPs before buying—no more vague promises.

If you’re an SMB leader who wants profit-first AI (not another shelfware experiment), let’s map 2–3 revenue and retention use cases, redesign the workflow, and stand up a 30-day pilot that pays for itself.
